Goodbye Mr Chotoye

Mr Chotoye has been here for 25 years!

Time has come to say goodbye to one of the longest serving members of staff at the College. Mr Chotoye has been teaching in this building since 1982!!

During that time he has maintained the highest levels of professionalism and taught Maths in a manner that brings both enjoyment and success. Mr Chotoye has been one of the most popular members of staff because the students trust him to do his best for them, to be patient as they try to understand and to be on hand constantly to offer his support.

He has seen many changes during his career - the transformation from Oxstalls Community School to Bishops’ College being one of them - but he has met every challenge with quiet calm resolution and got on with the job. He is a credit to the profession.

Robot Wars!

Daniel Forrester, Nick Miles & Daniel Cratchley

On the 29th November a team of three; Daniel Forrester, Daniel Cratchley & Nicholas Miles, visited Hewlet Packard to take part in the annual Robotics Challenge competition. Our team of three was the smallest, but they were very effective. Of 28 schools which included grammar and private the team manage to navigate their way to the final 8 in the knockout stages. Our moment of glory was when we topped the leader board at the end of the first round. Although it was their first competition they performed like seasoned veterans. As part of the challenge they had to do a PowerPoint presentation in front of HP bosses that investigated potential energy conservation at Bishops’. As you can see the lads had a wonderful day and they were a credit to the school.

World Food Day Winners

Bishops’ College took part in World Food Day by raising money for the UN Schools Feeding Programme. Led by the newly elected School Parliament, the pupils were challenged to ‘Buy 1, Give 2 Free.’

It costs around 12p to feed two children in less economically developed countries, so when the pupils bought or ate their lunches they where encouraged to give 12p (Buy 1, Give 2 Free).

The School Parliament also spoke at a special Whole School Assembly about Harvest and being grateful for what we have. At lunchtime the school took part in a fete to raise even more money and pupils from Year 7, 8 and 9 organised stalls including ‘Guess the baby picture’, ‘Tombola’, ‘Teddy Bear Raffle’, ‘Unlucky Dip’ and ‘Soak the Teacher’. The pupils raised £130 in total which will provide 1083 meals.

Mrs Davies-Godsell entered Bishops’ in the County Council’s ‘The B1G1F’ Competition and we won!  Six members of parliament will now be going on a trip to London.  Well done everyone who took part!

Our Carbon Footprint

Kerrie Tippins, Jordan Douglas & Ryan Boucher

On Friday, 21st September BP chose Bishops’ College to receive a visit from its Climate Change Roadshow Team. The three representatives met with 200 students from Years 10 & 11 for a fun packed morning of activities designed to test their awareness of current issues and to build further their ideas and expectations for the future.

The visit was a resounding success on both sides. The students had a great morning with Year 11 narrowly beating Year 10 in the challenge quiz! Feedback from BP was very positive towards both the school, which they called a great environment, and the students who were eager to join in, knowledgeable and very polite and friendly.

The school is looking forward to building the link with BP, with two members of the science department visiting BP at Swindon with other delegates from the South of England region. They will feedback on the quality of the day and work on more resources for use in schools across the country.

Year 11 Work Experience

102 Year 11 pupils completed their two weeks’ work experience at the start of this term.

Their placements ranged from working in schools, nursing homes, child care, hairdressers, architects, many local government offices including Shire Hall, the prison, all the utility works and many retail outlets.

The majority of the pupils gained invaluable knowledge of working life and rose to all challenges put to them in their placements. Ten pupils were offered either part time work or an apprenticeship upon leaving school!  This experience has also had a positive effect on the pupils’ attitude to school and their learning.  Many of the pupils received very positive comments from their employers: one hair dresser said they were the best pupils she had ever had and offered both girls a job.  A member of the public contacted the school to say how impressed she was with the two pupils working at her children’s nursery and how much her children would miss them when the pupils returned to school. Many employers’ commented on how polite and hard working the pupils were, with 28 students receiving excellent reports. Overall it was a very positive experience for the overwhelming majority of the pupils.

Special thanks to Mrs Welch, Mrs Matthews and Miss Rooks for their outstanding support for Year 11.
